Brief job description:

Estio Training have an exciting new opportunity for an Engineering Assistant Apprentice with Kimble Solar, a fast-growing and award-winning family-run renewable energy installation business based in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.

Job Description:

The primary role of the Engineering Assistant is to support the technical planning team in processing new solar installation orders. Our cross functional team will help develop your skills and support you on your Software Developer path within Kimble Solar. This involves verifying new orders, validating designs, and processing survey information using various software packages. Additionally, as a company that continuously seeks to improve, innovate, and streamline processes, software development is integral to our operations. The secondary role of the Engineering Assistant is to assist the IT manager in developing our systems across the business.

Your duties and responsibilities in this role will consist of:

  • Check new orders against electrical and structural engineering criteria and product datasheets.
  • Create technical documentation.
  • Process drone images into 3D models.
  • Draw up roof spaces in 2D and validate panel layouts.
  • Create system schematics and generate system performance reports.
  • Prepare bills of materials.
  • Participating in product and technology concepts, discovery, and design discussions and decisions.
  • Help solve business problems and design systems under guidance for our platform.
  • Understand the business problems which needs to be solved, and work with others
  • Generate DNO applications.
  • Escalate problems and issues as they arise to the Engineering Manager.
  • Attend site visits and surveys as needed.
  • Assist the sales team with technical and IT-related queries.
  • Support the IT manager with software and systems development.
  • Perform other ad hoc tasks to support the business in a technical capacity.


  • 5 GCSEs grades A*-C/9-4 or equivalent (including English Language and Maths)

Skills Required:

  • Computer literacy.
  • Excellent communication skills via telephone and email/text.
  • Logical and problem-solving skills.
  • Programming skills (advantageous).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • High Maths and Science grades preferred.

  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Positive spirit and a can-do attitude.
  • Logical thinking.
  • Organised and punctual.

Training to be provided:

Successful completion of this apprenticeship gives you an accredited Level 4 Software Developer, with training in how to:

  • Create logical and maintainable codes for software development.
  • Apply security best practice to the software solution throughout the software development life cycle.
  • Apply appropriate recovery techniques to ensure the software solution being developed is not lost.
  • Implement accurate and effective change control.
  • Undertake unit testing of solutions, with appropriate levels of test code coverage, to identify and resolve issues.
  • Apply suitable ‘bug fixes’ based on severity and priority.
