Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to take your first step in a new career, allowing you to develop the important skills and knowledge needed to succeed through a combination of study and paid work experience. If you’re considering starting your own apprenticeship journey, you should first consider the apprenticeship standards for your chosen course.
Apprenticeship standards are a set of expectations that apprentices must meet for the duration of their course. This criteria generally includes the skills and responsibilities that you need to succeed in your chosen line of work and is set by employer groups called ‘trailblazers’.
Each apprenticeship with have its own set of apprenticeship standards and the number of expectations outlined will vary depending on the course. With apprenticeship standards varying so much, it’s important to familiarise yourself with the specific standards outlined for your chosen course.
Funding bands are used to indicate the maximum funding available from the government for each apprenticeship. According to latest apprenticeship standard funding bands are split into 30 categories, each with a different upper limit (max. funding). Band 1 has the lowest limit at £1,500 per apprenticeship, with band 30 indicating the highest government funding per apprenticeship at £27,000. According to official apprenticeship standards, the Digital Support Technician Apprenticeship is a level 3 qualification teaching learners to maximise the effective use of digital office technologies, productivity software and digital communications in organisations of all kinds.

The Application Support Lead Apprenticeship Standard states this is a level 4 qualification which equips learners with the skills to provide tactical advice, training and support on core technology applications.

The Information Communications Technician Apprenticeship Standard says this is a level 3 course teaching learners to deliver efficient operation and control of IT within an organisation.

The Cyber Security Technologist Apprenticeship Standard is level 4 qualification based around applying an understanding of cyber security to protect from attacks and unauthorised access.

The Software Developer Apprenticeship Standard describes this as a level 4 qualification based on building and testing simple, high-quality code for software.

The Software Tester Apprenticeship Standard states this is a level 4 qualification which involves carrying out tests to make sure computer software works as intended and is fit for purpose.

The DevOps Engineer Apprenticeship Standard describes this as a level 4 apprenticeship based on enabling organisations to get valuable working software out in front of active users and improving the quality of digital services.
