Job Description:
Exe Squared is seeking a Software Developer Apprentice to join its in-house team of experienced full-stack developers. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience across the full technology stack—working on real-world web applications, internal systems, and data-driven solutions for a wide range of industries.
The successful candidate will be involved in projects that span both front-end and back-end development, with a strong emphasis on database design and integration using MySQL. Our core development work is done in PHP, but apprentices will also gain exposure to additional languages such as JavaScript, Go, Rust, C++, C#, and Python, depending on the project.
As a Linux-based development environment, we frequently use tools such as GIT & Ansible for automation and deployment. Apprentices will learn best practices in code versioning, testing, and deployment, and will be supported by experienced mentors throughout their training.
This role is ideal for someone with a keen interest in software development, a strong problem-solving mindset, and a desire to become a well-rounded full-stack developer.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the design, development, testing, and maintenance of custom web applications and digital solutions.
- Learn and apply best practices in both front-end and back-end development.
- Work with databases, APIs, and version control systems.
- Contribute to hardware-related development tasks, where applicable (e.g., 3D printing or IoT integrations).
Qualifications:
- Educational Requirements: 5 GCSEs grades A*-C/9-4 or equivalent, including English Language and Maths.
Skills & Personal Qualities Required:
- Basic previous programming experience (e.g. PHP, Python, JavaScript, HTML/CSS)
- Basic knowledge of web technologies.
- A genuine interest in IT and software development.
- Logical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- A willingness to learn and work as part of a team.
- Good communication skill.
Other Information:
- Private Health Insurance (after 1 yr) which comes with a range of additional perks such as free cinema tickets, free coffees and other options.
- Free Parking.
- Accessible to public transport (Bus)
Future Prospects:
We have a great track record of retaining our previous apprentices (4 still work here!) who have all grown into expanded roles, each now being responsible for multiple client systems, managing the full development lifecycle for each, and gaining new technology skills and integrating new platforms into our existing workflows.
